Empowering Youth: Reflecting on 5 Inspiring Years at the Career Development Conference

As I celebrate five incredible years volunteering as a judge at the Youth Solutions Career Development Conference, I want to share some impactful experiences and memorable moments. Each year, this event sparks new inspiration, fueling our passion for empowering the next generation. The brilliance and determination of our young participants remind us of the significant impact we can create through shared efforts.

The highlight for me this year was an engaging session called "Prep to Impress." In just 12 minutes, students presented their career aspirations, participated in mock interviews, and received constructive feedback from seasoned professionals. This dynamic format not only encourages growth but also allows students to shine brightly in front of their peers.

Throughout the session, I witnessed the incredible potential within each young participant, proving that with the right support, they can achieve remarkable things.

Highlights from the Prep to Impress Experience

The diverse range of talent displayed during "Prep to Impress" was truly inspiring.

One student stood out by bravely sharing her nerves before beginning her presentation. Once she started, she captivated us all with clear and confident articulation of her entrepreneurial goals. This moment reminded us that vulnerability can often lead to unexpected strength. By expressing her nerves, she not only showcased her courage but also touched the hearts of everyone present.

Another participant initially seemed hesitant to share his aspirations. However, with encouragement, he gradually articulated his big dreams, which deserved recognition. This transformation showcased how important it is to create supportive environments for young people to express themselves confidently.

Lastly, one student arrived well-prepared with a detailed plan to break into the public sector. His presentation included not just his goals but also thoughtful questions about my professional journey. This willingness to engage and learn demonstrated how preparation and curiosity can significantly enhance one’s aspirations.

In fact, research shows that 92 percent of employers prioritize soft skills as much as, or more than, technical skills. This highlights the importance of developing both areas in our approach to youth empowerment.
